A MID 18TH CENTURY RUSSIAN SILVER SUGAR BOWL AND COVER, oval bellied form, the sides with four fluted panels, the domed, hinged cover with engraved, ornate "C & AB" monogram, raised on four scrolled feet, gilt interior, the exterior of the base with assay master's original test scrape. Moscow, circa 1745, maker's mark rubbed, possibly Vasiliy Nikitin (recorded in Paulson's Russian Silver Hallmarks (published privately, 1976) as being active 1737-1767), assay master's mark "GG" for K. Grigor'Yev (assay master at Moscow, 1741- 1749), Moscow mark rubbed and exact date indistinct. Height 8cm, length 12.7cm, weight 190 grams (6.12 troy ounces).
This sugar bowl was made during the reign of the Empress Elizabeth (Elizaveta Petrovna), 1709-1762, reigned 1741-1762.
