THE SUTLEJ MEDAL 1845-46 TO PRIVATE HENRY SANSOM, 62ND (WILTSHIRE) REGIMENT (THE POST 1880 1ST BATTALION THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S WILTSHIRE REGIMENT), WHO SUBSEQUENTLY SAW SERVICE AS A CORPORAL DURING THE INDIAN MUTINY WITH THE 53RD FOOT (SHROPSHIRE) REGIMENT (THE POST 1880 1ST BATTALION THE KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY) AND THE 6TH BENGAL EUROPEAN REGIMENT (ALSO ENTITLED INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL WITH RELIEF OF LUCKNOW AND LUCKNOW CLASPS). Sutlej Medal 1845-46, Aliwal reverse, 1 clasp, Sobraon (partially renamed, the recipient's name re-engraved in crude serifed block capitals in a contemporary style, but the regimental details "62nd REGt" are, however, officially impressed in serifed block capitals, and with the regimental designation "62nd" faint but still visible). Scattered rim bruises, edge nicks and surface contact marks, otherwise Very Fine to Good Very Fine.
Medal accompanied by copied extracts Sutlej Medal roll, confirming medal and clasps, extract 1851 British Army Worldwide Index, which records Sansom serving at Rawalpindi as a Private with the 53rd Foot in 1851, extracts Indian Mutiny Medal roll (2, original and published), confirming service as 2616 Corporal 53rd Foot during the Indian Mutiny, the published medal roll confirming previous service as 2446 Private with 62nd Foot and both original and published rolls confirming that Sansom subsequently saw service with the 6th Bengal European Regiment.
The 6th Bengal Eurpean Regiment was raised in 1858 for service during the Indian Mutiny, the officers of the regiment being drawn from two Indian regiments that had mutinied, the 7th and 8th Bengal Native Infantry. The regiment was reduced to cadre strength in 1861 and disbanded in 1867.
Medal also accompanied by extract from FIBIS regarding a Henry Sansom who was contracted for service as a Quarryman with the Great India Peninsular Railway (GIPR) on 13/9/1869. Possibly the recipient of this Sutlej Medal, serving in a civilian capacity after being discharged from the army.
