THE QUEEN'S SUDAN MEDAL TO PRIVATE A. MARTIN, 1ST BATTALION RIFLE BRIGADE, WHO ALSO SAW SERVICE DURING THE BOER WAR. Queen's Sudan Medal (an officially named late issue, impressed in small neat serifed capitals: 1444, A. MARTIN, 1st. BATT. RIFLE BRIGADE). Attractively toned, Very Fine to Good Very Fine, and with a good length of original ribbon.
Medal accompanied by biographical details, 6 pages copied service and discharge papers and copied extracts Queen's Sudan and QSA (2) Medal rolls, confirming that Martin was awarded the Queen's Sudan Medal for Khartoum (also entitled Khedives Sudan Medal with Khartoum clasp) and was also awarded the QSA with 6 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek and South Africa 1901.
Albert Thomas Martin (1875-1909) was born in Hounslow, Isleworth, Middlesex. He enlisted into the Rifle Brigade at Winchester on 24/8/1891. At the time of enlistment he was 18 years and 3 months old and gave his trade as labourer and was discharged as medically unfit, 8/2/1902.
When I purchased this medal (Noonans, 14/2/24, lot 727, part) it was described by the auctioneer as being "renamed". This is not the case, the medal has not been skimmed and it measures correctly at 36.5mm in an electronic gauge. It is, in fact, an official late issue, as described above.
