Medal accompanied by 23 pages of copied service papers for Meikle's three periods of service with the Army Service Corps and copied extracts (2) from the QSA Medal roll, confirming medal and clasps. Medal rolls additionally confirm that Meikle saw service during the Boer War with No. 21 R Company and No. 65 Company, Army Service Corps, during the Boer War.
James Meikle was born in the parish of Auchterderran, Lochgelly, Fifeshire, circa 1868. He first enlisted into the Army Service Corps at Edinburgh on 5/11/1887. At the time of enlistment he was 19 years and 8 months old and gave his trade as clerk. Meikle transferred to the Army Reserve with the rank of Lance Corporal on 5/11/1890 and was discharged from the Army Reserve on 4/11/1899. Meikle re-enlisted into the Army Service Corps at Hamilton on 27/4/1900, following the outbreak of the Boer War, but this second engagement was cancelled the following day. Meikle enlisted for a third time at Aldershot on 11/6/1900 and was eventually discharged with the rank of Sergeant on 5/3/1909. In addition to service at home, Meikle also saw service in South Africa from February 1901 to February 1902.
