Elvin James Charles Pittard (1875-1952) was born in Camberwell, London, on 9/6/1875. He initially enlisted into the Militia (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 21/6/1892. At the time of enlistment into the Militia Pittard was 18 years old and gave his place of residence as Peckham, London. Pittard enlisted into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 14/4/1893. At the time of enlistment he was 18 years and 8 months old, and gave his trade as labourer. Pittard was discharged 30/4/1905, transferring to the Army reserve. Pittard re-enlisted into the Warwickshire regiment following the outbreak of WW1 on 25/08/1914. Medal Index Card confirms that Pittard saw service during WW1 initially in France, from 4/5/1915, transferring to the 25th Battalion Rifle Brigade on 11/10/1916. Pittard subsequently saw service with the West Indies Regiment (Jamaica Contingent) at Port Royal from 12/7/1917 to 16/12/1918. Silver War Badge Roll records that he was eventually discharged on 15/6/1919. WW1 service papers record that Pittard rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major,
Regimental Sergeant-Major Pittard was also entitled to the Queen's Sudan Medal and a 1914-15 Star Trio.
