Both battalions of the Royal Ulster Rifles saw service in Palestine prior to WW2, the 2nd Battalion subsequently seeing service with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940, the surviving officers and men of the battalion taking part in the Dunkirk evacuation. That battalion also took part in the D-Day landings, landing on Sword Bach on the afternon of "D" Day. Subsequently the battalion took part in the Battle of Normandy, including operation Charnwood, the assault on and capture of Caen, the officers and men of the 2nd Ulster Rifles being the first troops to enter the city. By the time the war ended, 8th May 1945, the battalion had taken part in the break-out from Normandy and was fighting inside Germany near the city of Bremen in Lower Saxony.
