PRIVATE S. WILKINSON, 7TH HUSSARS.Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58, 1 clasp, Lucknow (naming unofficially corrected, rank, initial and surname re-engraved in neat serifed block capitals: PTE. S. WILKINSON, but the regimental details officially are, however, officially impressed: 7th HUSSrs.). Scattered rim nicks, otherwise Good Very Fine.
Samuel Wilkinson's surname is mis-spelt "Williamson" on the original medal roll and "Willanson" on the published medal roll, but service number on both these medal roll's match the service number on Samuel Wilkinson's service papers.
Samuel Wilkinson's Indian Mutiny Medal was probably issued with his surnamed spelt incorrectly (probably "Williamson" as on the original medal roll), Wilkinson having the medal re-engraved with the correct spelling of his name.
Medal accompanied by 4 pages copied service papers and copied extracts medal rolls (2, original and published), confirming medal and clasp.
Samuel Wilkinson was born in Stewartstown, Co. Tyrone. He enlisted into the 7th Hussars at Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 4/8/1853. At the time of enlistment Wilkinson was 18 years old and gave his trade as labourer. Wilkinson saw service initially as 1485 Private, was promoted Corporal, 30/6/1868 but reduced to Private on 31/10/1870, and did not rise above the rank of Private again, being discharged at Edinburgh on 7/9/1876, "at his own request, free, with pension after 21 years service", having seen 21 years and 47 days service with the colours (21 years and 44 years pensionable service). In addition to service at home, Wilkinson saw service in the East Indies for 12 years and 4 months.
