Harry Russell was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He enlisted into the Lincolnshire Regiment on 28/9/1891. At the time of enlistment Russell was 18 years and 4 months old, gave his trade as general labourer and stated that he was then serving with the 3rd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (Royal North Lincolnshire Militia). He was appointed Corporal (without pay) 23/3/1893 but resigned the rank and reverted to Private 24/4/1893. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment 12/12/1893 and transferred back to the 1st Battalion 19/4/1895 and transferred to the Army Reserve on 30/10/1898 and was discharged on 20/5/1902, after 10 years and 235 days service with the colours. Service papers confirm that Russell's sole medal entitlement were the Queen's and King's Sudan Medals and that, in addition to service at home, he also saw service in the Straits Settlements, Malta and Egypt.
