MEXICO. CHARLES IV (1788-1808) 8 REALES, MEXICO CITY MINT, 1803, (FT). A WELL-STRUCK "SHEFFIELD PLATE" TYPE CONTEMPORARY FORGERY. Test mark to reverse rim at 1 o'clock and small scratch to obverse field (test mark?) below king's chin and plating worn away on king's chin, otherwise with an attractive dark tone, well struck and a particularly well executed forgery.
I am told by an authority on the subject that this is such a good forgery that, even today, it might pass for genuine on casual inspection.
